Studying science in Italy?
Ten South Dakota students received special scholarships to study deep science over the summer.

The Davis-Bahcall Scholarships for Underground Science, sponsored by 3M Company, pay tuition and room and board for the students to participate in a summer study program that visits Sanford Laboratory at Homestake in Lead, Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy, and Princeton University in New Jersey.

This year’s winners included:

• Nicole DeJong, Avon; Black Hills State University
• Jerald Farke, Armour; South Dakota School of Mines and Technology
• Bryce Frentz, Sioux Falls; Washington High School
• Andrew Gaspar, Sioux Falls; O’Gorman High School
• Steven Harding, Jefferson; University of South Dakota
• Louis Kjerstad, Rapid City; St. Thomas More High School
• Dexter May, Brookings; Brookings High School
• Virginia Price, Rapid City; Montana State University
• Stephanie Vedvei, Groton; Groton Area High School

Given every year, the Davis-Bahcall Scholarship Program is open to high school seniors and college freshman. This year, nearly 80 students applied for this unique study experience. The winners were selected on the basis of scholastic scores, involvement in extracurricular activities, essays, support letters and personal interviews
